He gave his Name
to the Municipality
Joseph-Ignace Aumond (1810-1979) gave his name to the municipality. Born in L'Assomption, he arrived in Bytown (Ottawa) as an employee of a Montreal merchant, and he started quickly in the lumber trade. He teamed up with John Egan and founded the Ottawa Lumber Association. It will be the only French-Canadian logger capable of competing with the "barons of the Gatineau", all Englishmen, and who held a monopoly on the cutting of timber on the Gatineau River and its tributaries. In 1840, the company has a thousand employees. In 1843, he opened his logging sites on the River Joseph (Aumond), being at the same time promoted lieutenant-colonel of the militia and being an important figure in Bytown. It is not certain that he has resided in Rivière Aumond but the municipality now bears his name.
